UGC NET July 2017 exam likely to be suspended first time in 33 years

The CBSE UGC NET July 2017 exam is likely to be suspended this year, according to the reports. The Central Board of Secondary Education became the organizing body for UGC NET from 2014 but as per the report, CBSE would not be able to conduct the test this year in July 2017.

This would be the first time UGC NET will be suspended in 33 years as the conducting agency CBSE is bogged down by other exams. According to the analysis, approximately 5 lakh aspirants appear in the UGC NET exam every year.

CBSE has not yet issued any official update regarding the suspension of CBSE UGC NET 2017. The uncertainty for holding the test is criticized by many of the students and academicians.

The UGC used to conduct the test for the award of Junior Research Fellowship since 1984. In 1988, the government asked UGC to hold the test for lectureship after which the commission renamed the test as National Eligibility Test (NET).

The National Eligibility Test is conducted twice a year in December and June to determine the eligibility of candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowship and Lectureship. The awardees need not appear in the entrance tests for Ph.D. programmes. This has been reported in many newspapers including The Telegraph, India.com

The chairman of CBSE had written to the HRD ministry six months ago about the inability of holding the NET as the board is already overloaded with the responsibility of conducting multiple exams such as National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, Central Teachers’ Eligibility Test, JEE-Main and the board exams for affiliated schools.
