PG Medical Admissions in Maharashtra through CET only

Single Common Entrance Test for postgraduate medical courses from 2017-2018 session

The admissions to postgraduate medical courses will be done on the basis of state common entrance test (CET) for the next academic year. The state government had released a resolution for CET last week. The notification regarding CET will also be sent to the colleges by the Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER)., as reported in HT

The move will affect the 3100 seats in government, private and deemed medical and dental colleges in the state. Until 2016, the private and deemed institutes used to their admissions separately but now the DMER has decided to streamline the admission process through state CET.

There are 1100 seats in the government institutes, while there are 800 and 1200 seats in the private and deemed institutes.

Earlier in 2016, the deemed institutes sought help from the Supreme Court for following their separate admission process. The Apex Court turned down their demand and the DMER and CET cell were directed to conduct all the medical and dental admissions in the state.

The decision of CET based single window admission process has brought cheer to the students but the private and deemed institutes are not happy with it. A Pune-based deemed medical institute official said that last year the admission process was conducted by the state government and more than 50% of their seats were left vacant.

The private and deemed medical institutes approach the senior government officials to discuss the matter regarding PG admissions.
