The Central Board of Secondary Education, in order to initiate character building and soft skills in academics is planning to introduce a value education across CBSE schools, which would be of three years.
The decision was taken post a workshop which was held recently on similar grounds. As per the circular on the official website of the CBSE, “In continuation to the orientation titled ‘Value Education: Why, What and How‘, held at the Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi on December 7 last year. The Awakened Citizen programme is to be implemented by the schools using their own teaching resources.”
The Awakened Citizen programme will be made possible with the assistance of the Ramakrishna Mission, which will further aspire to brig students at par on soft skills, character building techniques and other similar life tools.
The decision will have to soon take a decision whether they want to run this programme in their institutions. Not only is it a three year programme but it will also a graded subject. It will comprise of 16 modules which will be run 40 minutes each for each year. Sharing their plan Piya Chakravarty of the Ramakrishna Mission said, “We will start this year with class VII and extend the programme to class VIII and IX over the next three years. We also plan to extend the course to all classes eventually.”
As per the information provided, the cost of the development of the programme, will be borne by the Ramakrishna Mission in New Delhi. Over the next two months, two teachers from each school will be trained from each school. Even though there are ample resources to carry out the programme but the best possible option is to be able to let teachers with the students.
Chakaravary shared, “We have also tested the programme and conducted an impact study in various cities. This is how we identified the need of such a programme to help students work towards developing faith in themselves,” on the programme spreading to pan India level after its pilot projects in Delhi.
A performance audit of the programme will be conducted by visiting schools, interaction with the teachers and students and collection of data.
