CBSE moves Supreme Court, seeking stay

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) moved the Supreme Court, seeking an immediate stay on the Madras High court order that was restraining the publication of results of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2017 for admission to MBBS and BDS.

The High court had on May 24 granted interim stay on publication of NEET results. Due to which the entire process of further admissions and counselling for the candidates who appeared for NEET became messed up and according to the high court bench, became “haywire”

The Plea being that uniform question papers were not given in NEET exam held on the May 7 and there was difficulty level difference in the question papers of Tamil and English. The petitioners to the court have alleged that variable set of question papers had been used. They argued that that questionnaire in Tamil Nadu was different between Tamil and English itself, and the one in Tamil was easier.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Maninder Singh, representing the CBSE communicated that the experts did examine question papers that were set in vernacular language– they were different in language but the level of difficulty cannot be different. This was done to protect the general interest, so that they the papers wouldn’t leak.

The petitioners have demanded that NEET 2017 should be considered cancelled and a fresh exam with uniform question papers should be conducted.
