New Delhi, A group of 40 Indian students, who obtained the doctor of medicine degree from the Philippines, Monday moved the Delhi High Court after the Medical Council of India (MCI) allegedly denied them permission to practice in the country.
Taking note of the petition, Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw issued notice to the central government and MCI seeking their response by Nov 21, the next date of hearing.
The court was hearing a bunch of petitions filed against the MCI by 40 students who got their medical degrees from Angeles University Foundation in the Philippines after their 2007-10 course.
The court directed the central government to find out whether the doctor of medicine degree was recognised in the Philippines.

Centre refuses to reduce eligibility marks for tribals, SC students
Agartala, The Union health ministry has refused to further ralax the eligibility for northeastern tribal and scheduled caste (SC) students for admission to medical colleges, a Tripura government official said here Friday.
According to the Medical Council of India (MCI), MBBS aspirants of northeastern tribal and SC categories must secure at least 40 percent marks in their class 12 board examinations.
The Tripura government and various political parties of the northeast had been requesting the central government and the MCI to further reduce this eligibility limit.

Court refuses to relax MBBS eligibility for northeast tribals
Agartala, Aug 10 (IANS) The Gauhati High Court Wednesday dismissed a plea for further relaxation of requisite marks for admission to medical colleges for the northeast’s tribal students, a lawyer said.
“Hearing the writ petition filed by tribal students and their guardians, the high court’s Agartala bench Justice Utpalendu Bikash Saha said that the MCI (Medical Council of India) had issued guidelines, setting the minimum score of 40 percent in science subjects in entrance examination for admission to medical colleges,” Assistant Solicitor General Pijush Kanti Biswas told reporters.
According to the MCI guidelines, a general category MBBS aspirants have to secure at least 50 percent marks in both Class 12 and the medical entrance examination.

All India MBBS CET likely from 2012-2013 session
The Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Health Ministry have finally reached a consensus to hold a All India Common Entrance Test for MBBS Course in all government run medical colleges, Private medical Colleges and Deemed Universities from 2012-2013 academic session. The meeting on Monday was attended by MCI , CBSE and Helth Ministry officials, reports the TOI.

500 medical colleges needed in five years
Medical Council of India (MCI) has projecting a need for as many as 500 medical colleges in the next five years. MCI also recommended that such institutions should each have at least 10 acres of land (which was 25 acres earlier) for a college and hospital and not more than 250 students (which was 200 students earlier).

AIIMS 2012 Entrance Exam will be an Online Entrance Test
Entrance exams to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ (AIIMS) will soon go online by 2012 similar to Common Admission Test (CAT) in 2009 and AIMA MAT, reports the Hindustan Times
AIIMS administration wants to conduct its entrance exams for undergraduate (MBBS) , PG and other courses, online, on the lines of AIMA & Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) to ensure total transparency. The other online model being considered is ENET as adapted by Manipal Medical College.
