Gujarat Government frames new rules for medical seats and scraps NRI seats to increase the management quota seats in medical colleges. The management quota has been increased from 10 % to 25 %. The judges also declared that the medical aspirants should have ample time to shift from one college to another. Therefore, every year MBBS admission should commence on September 20 and the last date of admission should be September 27. “So that one week’s time is available for a candidate to shift admission,” excerpted the bench.
The collection of hefty capitation fee was one of the main reasons afflicting medical education in the country. If this practice is not immediately checked upon, then the entire medical sector would be commercialized that would ultimately contaminate the public health system and corrupt even the responsible doctors. The petitioner also confirmed that an MBBS seat is sold for nearly INR 1 crore, due to the unavailability of a uniform and fixed pay structure.
