CAT Retest in mid January for about 8000 aggrieved students

December 16th, 2009

CAT Retest in mid January for about 8000 aggrieved students. 200,000, took the exam successfully and satisfactorily.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) on Wednesday apologised for failing to hold a flawless Common Admission Test (CAT) this year and promised that a retest will be conducted for all aggrieved students in mid-January.

“The IIMs through a CBT (computer based test) based CAT 2009 wished to enhance the quality of exam taking for a large number of candidates by providing them an improved testing environment.

IIMs did not blame the test conducting firm Prometric entirely for the problem. “Its not a capacity problem. I don’t doubt the credibility,” Barua said but added that “their contract with us is always under review. It can fall if we are not satisfied”.

Nearly 242,000 candidates registered for the CAT-2009 but only 216,000 took the test. The IIMs said that while 24,000 aspirants did not show up for the test at all, 2,000 need to give a retest.

But IIMs refused to go back to the pen-pencil format for CAT. >> Read More

CAT 2009 by IIMs – a Few Questions answered

November 9th, 2009

CAT 2009 by IIMs – a Few Questions answered

Todays issue of Business Standard have published few answers to Questions and doubts  that  CAT 2009 aspirants may have in their mind. Here are a few of them:

What is the minimum score to clear CAT?
This depends on the difficulty level of the paper and relative performance of others. Generally attempting around 60 per cent of the questions with around 80 per cent accuracy is good enough to get multiple IIM calls.

With a computer-based test, how should I do rough work/calculations?
The IIMs have stated that you will get writing pads with numbered pages on which you can do your calculations / rough-work. However, please do not tear off any part of the pad as you are expected to leave the pad and all sheets on the table before you leave. If you run out of paper, the invigilator will be happy to give you another pad.

What’s the CAT pattern?
CAT 2009 will have three sections and between 60–70 questions. But that is all that we know. For more clarity, we will have to wait for November 28.

What is the negative marking pattern this year?
The negative marking scheme last year was 1 mark per question (each question was worth 4 marks). The negative marking scheme for CAT 2009 is yet to be released.

Can I change my answer once I’ve made a choice?
Yes. You can change your answers as often as you like within the 2 hours and 15 minutes available to you. However, you can skip questions as well go back and forth between questions.

If I’ve marked an answer, can I deselect it?
There is no provision to deselect the answer choice or to skip a question after it has been attempted.

Give us some tips for CAT
Focus on the Concepts in Quant. For DI and Verbal practice, focus on the mock CAT and try to practice with as many questions as possible. Take one mock CAT a day and then analyse the paper for around 4–5 hours.

What documents do I need?
You need an Admit Card, Voucher, Photo ID card, and caste certificate in case you belong to SC/ST categories.

When will we get to know the score?
Only in the second week of January.

Security Mechanism in place for CAT exam this year

October 19th, 2009

Security Mechanism in place for CAT exam this year.

IIMs use biometrics to prevent CAT applicants from cheating,  reports the Business Standard. CAT 2009 will be conducted between November 28 and December 7.

To avoid a repeat of the Common Admission Test (CAT) paper leak in 2003, the Indian Institutes of Management(IIMs), which conduct the exam usually, spend a tense few months to ensure there are no leaks and glitches. This time around, aided by technology and a professional examination conducting company, the IIMs are confident there will be no security breaches.

Prometric, the company that bagged the contract to conduct the computer-based examination this year has a security mechanism in place which will help the IIMs manage over 2 lakh applications received this year. Also being introduced is capturing of biometric information which will ensure that no fradulent motives like writing the exam twice or using a proxy candidate can be used.

It is learnt that despite the instructions given to students in the CAT bulletin, nearly 1,000 applications every year get rejected by the IIMs due to discrepancies in the forms of which a few of them are suspected to be deliberate.

“Till last year, there were cases where the photographs would not match or candidates would not attach their photographs while applying for hall ticket. Since there were chances of somebody else appearing as proxy for these candidates, the institute used to reject such cases. On an average, the institute used to come across 100-200 such cases involving photographs,” said a source.

CAT 2009 Application Deadlines Extended upto October 11, 2009

October 1st, 2009

CAT 2009 Application Deadlines Extended upto October 11, 2009

The Common Admission Test (CAT) for entry into the IIMs and 150 other B-schools has not found many takers this year., reports the Economics Times. As per IIMs, the number of candidates registered for CAT has been around two lakh, even as online registration process that was earlier scheduled to close on October 1 has been extended to October 11. Last year, the number of CAT applicants was 2.76 lakh. While the number of CAT applicants has been rising 10% every year, the past three years saw a 20-25% rise in number of candidates.

For those MBA aspirants who were late to catch the CAT 2009 groovy-train, here is another chance! IIMs have announced on September 30 today that they will be extending the sale of CAT vouchers up till October 8, and online registration till October 11. That’s a cool 10 more days!

Reasoning that many bank holidays may hamper the last minute rush of CAT aspirants, IIMs said, “In view of a series of bank holidays that may have inconvenienced some candidates, IIMs and Prometric have extended the sale of CAT 2009 vouchers to 8 October 2009.”

Online registration for CAT 2009, which began on Wednesday, 9 September 2009, will now be open till October 11. Earlier it was supposed to end on Thursday, 1 October 2009. “Candidates will have until 11 October 2009 to complete their online registration and scheduling. The edit feature will also be available until 11 October 2009,” said IIMs on their official website CATIIM.in.

CAT 2009 will be held in a window of 10 days, starting from Saturday, November 28 to Monday December 7, 2009. The test will be held in two slots, Session 1, the morning session will be from 10 AM to 12.30 PM.
