The Statement says , “As per communication received from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India regarding seeking permission from the Hon’ble Supreme Court to allow introduction of NEET for Under Graduate Medical Courses from the academic year 2013-14 instead of 2012-13, the Central Board of Secondary Education would now conduct the All India Pre-Medical/ Pre-Dental Entrance Examination only for the 15% all India quota seats” Read more…

Supreme Court rejects CBSE’s proposal for merging AIEEE & AIPMT Exam

The Supreme Court on Friday  rejected the  Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) proposal of merging the All India Pre medical Test (AIPMT ) and All India Engineering Entrance Examination AIEEE into a single entrance test for admissions to undergraduate medical and engineering courses in the country, reports the Times of India

A bench of Justices R V Raveendran and A K Patnaik, which entertained the CBSE’s proposal dismissed the Board’s plea saying there was no unanimity.
While the All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Examination (AIPMT) is conducted to fill 15% seats in MBBS/BDS courses in government medical and dental colleges against the all-India quota, the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is for drawing up a combined merit list for a different category of engineering colleges. CBSE conducts both AIPMT and AIEEE every year.

Manipal feels betrayed in Nepal

Kathmandu,  Hit by a strike in its 825-bed hospital in western Nepal since Sunday and plagued by violence and militant labour unions, the Manipal College of Medical Sciences (MCMS), Nepal’s first private medical college, feels betrayed.

“Two years ago, the Manipal Group was asked by the government of Malaysia to start a medical and a dental college in Malaysia,” says B.M. Nagpal, dean of MCMS. “This year, the college is already up and has begun admitting students. This is an example of fast track. And who profits from this progress? The country.”

But in Nepal, where the group started the medical college in Pokhara city in western Nepal’s Kaski district 16 years ago on the invitation of the Nepal government, there has been zero progress.

IGNOU to launch post-graduate medical programmes

New Delhi, The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is to launch a series of post graduate medical programmes, a varsity statement said Tuesday.

The School of Health Sciences (SOHS) of IGNOU will be launching a medical cell wherein a series of post graduate medical programmes having national and social relevance shall be launched, it said.

“The school is initiating the planning and development of three full-time PG medical programmes of two year duration each. These are Post Graduate Diploma in Anaesthesia, Post Graduate Diploma in Radio-Diagnosis and Post Graduate Diploma in Critical Care Medicine for those with MBBS degree,” the statement said.

“These programmes aim of solving the need of trained doctors in the above specialties,” it said.

MCI notification  on MCI website Says - NEET-PG: The common entrance test (CET) for admission to Medical Post-graduate Courses across the country i.e. National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Medical Postgraduate Courses – MD/MS/Diploma (NEET-PG ) shall be held in Jan-Feb 2012 for admissions in the academic year 2012-2013.

Medical students attempt suicide over low marks

Kanpur,  Depressed over their poor performance in exams, three MBBS students of a government medical college here attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills, police said Saturday. Their condition is said to be serious.

Shobit Verma, Vivek Tandon and Sanjeev Kumar — all second year students of G.S.V.M medical college — attempted suicide late Friday, and are now admitted to a hospital.

Centre refuses to reduce eligibility marks for tribals, SC students

Agartala,  The Union health ministry has refused to further ralax the eligibility for northeastern tribal and scheduled caste (SC) students for admission to medical colleges, a Tripura government official said here Friday.

According to the Medical Council of India (MCI), MBBS aspirants of northeastern tribal and SC categories must secure at least 40 percent marks in their class 12 board examinations.

The Tripura government and various political parties of the northeast had been requesting the central government and the MCI to further reduce this eligibility limit.

IGNOU to honour Dalai Lama

New Delhi,  The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will confer an honorary doctor of letters degree on Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama at its 24th convocation next month, an official said Thursday.

“His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be awarded the degree of doctor of letters (Honoris Causa),” a varsity official said.

Court scraps 11 Kerala colleges’ medical entrance test

Kochi,  The Kerala High Court Wednesday declared the entrance examination conducted by 11 private medical colleges as null and void and asked the state government to take over all the seats for making fresh admissions.

The judgment has hit more than 500 students who had paid hefty capitation fees for admissions to these colleges.

Justice Antony Dominic delivered the judgment after a student filed a petition alleging that the private college managements flouted the rules.
