Youth should undertake innovative research: Deshmukh

New Delhi,  Science and Technology Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh Monday urged youngsters to conduct innovative research in the country and take up the challenge of securing India’s leadership in science.

In his address at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Day here, he referred the bill for setting up an Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) passed in the Lok Sabha recently and expressed confidence that it will emerge as a world class organisation to secure India’s leadership in tomorrow’s science.

“This would attract the best students to remain in the country and will enable them to out-compete and out-innovate the rest of the world,” said Deshmukh.

IGNOU to offer electronics, IT courses

New Delhi,  The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Thursday said it will offer diploma and degree programmes in advanced information and communication technology and electronics.

The varsity has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, and will develop full and part time courses.

“The master of technology programme would consist of specific set of course work for one year, followed by a project of one-year duration,” an IGNOU statement said.

Orissa institute scripts placement record

Bhubaneswar,  Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) picked up 708 students on a single day from an Orissa university during a campus selection drive, an official said Monday, describing it as a record.

The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar has scripted a placement record, senior public relations officer Shradhanjali Nayak told IANS.

“Job offer to so many students by a single company in campus placement on a single day is a record in eastern India as well as another record in entire country in terms of percentage,” she said.

Nobel laureates to answer students’ questions

Lucknow,  Guess who will be answering scientific queries of students at the Indian Institute of Information Technology-Allahabad (IIIT-A)? Nobel laureates.

The institute will link up with some Nobel laureates who have attended the annual science conclave organised by it since 2008. The queries will be send to them via e-mails by the authorities.

“During the annual science conclave, students are given an opportunity to interact with the eminent scientists,” IIIT-A public relations officer (PRO) Pankaj Mishra told reporters in Allahabad, 200 km from here.

New fee structure for IITs discussed

New Delhi,  A new fee structure, a common entrance test giving weightage to Class 12 exam marks and higher focus on research were among the issues discussed at a meeting here Wednesday of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Council.

The council, a governing body responsible for all the IITs, took a look at a proposal to indirectly hike the annual fee of a general category student from Rs.50,000 to Rs.2 lakh.

“The expenditure on one student in IIT is Rs.7-8 lakh, whereas the fee is Rs.50,000,” Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said after the meeting.

“We said the fee cannot be hiked, but under the new system discussed, the student will pay the same fee at the time of admission. When they start working, the rest of their fee will be paid in installments from their salaries,” the minister said.

Students turn teachers by evening to fight illiteracy

Lucknow,  They are students who become teachers by evening to make street urchins and poor children literate! Ten undergraduates from Uttar Pradesh’s Indian Institute of Information Technology-Allahabad (IIIT-A) feel they are already doing their bit for society.

The third year students are fighting illiteracy in their own way by teaching the poor children of the areas adjoining their institute in the Jhalwa area.

“If you are a student of a renowned institute like ours, people have high expectations from you. They expect you will work for the nation’s development,” Rahul Kumar, a student involved in the teaching, told IANS on phone from Allahabad, 200 km from Lucknow.

“We still don’t know in which company we would be employed but are quite happy that we have already started living up to the expectations of the people,” he said.

Indian varsities slip in global ranking

Indian varsities slip in global ranking

New Delhi,  Indian universities have slipped in the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) global ranking with not even a single one making it to the top 200.

The Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT-Delhi) marks the first entry for India at the 218th rank in the list. It is followed by IIT-Bombay at 225th position. IIT-Madras follows at 281st position. The report was released Monday.

Last year, IIT-Bombay was at 187, IIT-Delhi at 202 and IIT-Madras at 262.

The list has been topped by Britain’s Cambridge University, followed by Harvard University of the US.

In separate subject wise category, the English department of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University has secured the 51st rank in the category of English language and literature.

IITs, IISc to use CAT 2011 for MBA admissions

Kolkata,  The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have decided to use CAT 2011 as part of the selection process of their MBA and management programmes from the 2012-13 academic year.

The Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) previously used for admission by the IITs and the IISc stands discontinued, according to an IIM media release here.

The decision was taken after a recent review revealed that the relatively young JMET is not too dissimilar to CAT, and that the effort to organise JMET each year seemed enormous in relation to the approximately 40,000 candidates who took the test each year.

Tata’s CMC to tie up with Goa trade body

Panaji,  Computer Maintenance Company (CMC), part of the Tata group, has tied up with Goa’s apex trade body, the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), to impart professional and work-oriented information technology skills to graduates passing out in the state.

“There are several students who secure 50 to 60 percent in the final exams are not employed by top firms. CMC Limited will be training them which will make them employable and compatible in the global IT scenario,” GCCI president Manguirish Pai Raikar told reporters here Friday.

“Almost 85 percent of the IT students, after passing out scout for good jobs outside the state and annually 1,500 students pass out from various engineering colleges in Goa,” Raikar said.
