Over one-third of the institutes listed by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in the ‘non-permitted and non-approved’ category belong to Gujarat.

Recently, the AICTE had prepared a list of institutes, which were set up without its permission. In total, 117 institutes providing degrees in several professional courses, including Masters of Business Administration, engineering and pharmacy, have been listed, of which 40 are based in Gujarat.

“The list has been sent to each State Council for Technical Education and Education Department. Because of negligence on the part of education departments, the students have to suffer. Their future is in doldrums now,” said a senior AICTE official.

He added: “In the last three years, we have sent several notices to all the state education departments and notified them on regular intervals to keep an eye on the institutes functioning without the permission of AICTE. But till now, no one has taken these notices seriously.”
